Why
the Doctors check your tongue and pulse in Oriental Medicine?

Thank you for choosing us to be your partner in achieving your goal to better health.  As partners in achieving your health goals to well being and wellness, we use the same methods as traditional western medicine.  That is: a medical history, lab tests, X-rays, physical exam, treatment plan, CAT scan and MRI scan.  In addition, in Oriental Medicine, we regularly check your pulse (28 types) & tongue (10 symptoms).  This check-up lets us know the severity of your problems and progress of your treatment, which tells us your body’s function and abnormality in the energy flow, in order to determine the treatment you receive.

For example: Tongue (Tongue color, Tongue coat color, Dry, Wet) & Pulse

  • Yellow/Dry:  Inflammation (Arthritis, Sciatica, Neck & Back Pain)

  • Yellow/Wet: Inflammation with phlegm mucous (Migraine; Tension headache Muscle aching & pain)

  • White/Dry: Dry mouth/initial stage of inflammation (Cold, Flu, Fibromyalgia)

  • White/Wet: Low energy/digestion problems (C.F.S. Diabetics, Bells palsy)

  • No Coat/Wet: The tongue is red, indicates (stomach) yin deficiency.  If the tongue is white, pale, indicates Qi and blood deficiency.  All of the above mentioned are usually seen in patients with diabetes, stroke, hypertension, kidney failure, or diseases in the late stages.

  • Black Coat/Dry: Extreme heat leads to consumption of body fluids. Usually seen in patients with severe constipation, tidal fever, and delirium.

  • Geographic Tongue:

  • White/wet, stomach qi deficiency. Qi and blood deficiency.

  • Yellow/dry, consumption of yin due to heat.

  • Geographic tongue is usually seen in severely ill patients, it is a sign of low energy, blood deficiency.  Also seen in patients with parasitic infection.  It could be congenital deficiency as well.

  • Rapid Pulse:  Inflammation (Fever, Infection, Severe Pain, Dehydration)

  • Slow Pulse: Weakness/low energy (Abnormalities of internal organs; or an after effect of surgical procedure)

Thank you again for allowing me to work with you in achieving your health goal.  My goal, as your partner, is simple, and that is “to make you feel better and happier.”
