General Information of Acupuncture (1)

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is the oldest known method for healing. As practiced in China for the past 6,000 years, this method has been successful in treating a wide range of ailments. The technique specifies the use of fine hair-like needles into specific body points known as meridians. This treatment has been used to promote healthy, longevity, and preventative care.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The theory behind acupuncture is that illness is created by imbalance of energy in the body. Correcting the imbalance restores bodily health. This is achieved through the use of acupuncture. With the proper skill in the use of fine hair-like needles, the latest research has shown that health can be restored. Though acupuncture has been proven to be successful, it is not recommended for all diseases, or for all people.

The way it works is three-fold. The needles stimulate the mid-brain, which in turn release some natural substance known as endogenous morphine or endorphins. Then in turn have three kinds of effects:

1.      As pain killers

2.      Anti-inflammatory

3.      Nerve lubricants

These natural substances are 20 times more powerful than morphine, but without its harmful side effects. Thus the effectiveness of acupuncture harnesses the body’s own system to produce the desired effect to its optimum.

Since the autonomic nervous system is also normalized the “side effects” experienced are that beneficent relaxation, increased energy, and well being after he treatment.

DOES IT HURT?

Since the needles used are so fine, most of the time insertion is generally not felt. There are occasions when a brief pinprick, pressure, or soreness is experienced.
